“IT’S A RACKIT”
Sonic Art’s new in-house manufactured
equipment shelving system “it’s a rackit”…a play on words, our feelings towards
some of the rather “expensive” shelving systems on the market!
I wanted to build a rack that offered a modular, customizable,
well damped solution to supporting our often delicate and always loved hifi equipment! I also wanted it to be affordable yet
without major compromises to the construction and performance.
“IT’S A RACKIT” is a modular
shelving system, it can be built into any number of shelves, and can be
customized to suit your needs exactly, from the shelf number & size, to the
length of the legs (within reason), we make it to suit you. The standard rack
design is built with either 26mm Merbau or 25mm Baltic
Birch shelves supported by solid 33mm Aluminium legs, the legs are isolated
from the shelves with Delrin decouplers.
The standard leg length gives you 180mm gap between shelves. We can make these
longer or shorter depending on your requirements. The legs are joined by
threaded rods and are very easy to assemble.
We build all our racks in two wood types, first is solid
Merbau strip joined sheets 26mm thick, a really nice
solid sheet that works very well in racks. The second is Baltic Birch plywood in
24mm thick panelswhich is also an amazingly good
shelf material, great for speaker boxes too!
We use a premium Danish hybrid oil on the Baltic
Birch, essentially furniture oil and poly resins combined to provide a semi
gloss to gloss finish that is durable and easy for the owner to repair &
recoat if ever required. We use premium furniture oil for the Merbau. We cut and shape the shelves then sand every one by
hand, working down to a fine grade of paper to achieve a smooth finish. The
beauty of oiled wood is it displays the natural grain and colour, it is hard
wearing and most importantly, very easy to repair should you scratch or mark
your shelves! Oiled wood especially, can be repaired by the end user easily,
simple to re-oil in years to come to bring the finish back to new.
The racks are not made on a production line, they are
hand made, hand finished, and every one will be unique. We sand and brush
finish the alloy legs, they have tiny pores and sometimes little marks in the
surface, this is all part of the hand made unique product. We could machine
every leg surface to perfection but then labour costs rocket upwards or we have
to employ automated machining (which is still expensive post covid!) resulting in standardised sizes and less choice for
you.
Feet: Racks will come with steel spikes which
screw into the base legs allowing you to level the rack on any surface. For
delicate surfaces you can purchase machined alloy discs to go under the spikes,
these have a felt layer on the underside.
